about

And here's the song inspired by all of those stories about Port Coldwell that my grandmother would tell. And her brother, Ivan - he filled in some pieces of the puzzle too when I got up to the North Shore to visit. It's a magical place. And you can still find little bits of evidence of its storied past - a cemetery, some old foundations, and of course lots of flowers.

5. Coldwell Bay (Dave Sills) © 2019

Train pulled in for water and some Nicoll Brothers trout
Hauled up past the ice house while the nets were drying out
Gid and Eileen Nicoll had the biggest house around
On the rocky north shore of Superior, in this lonely fishin’ town

Well Gideon played the fiddle, Eileen she played guitar
For miners, teacher, loggers, preacher, and the Mountie from afar
And ol’ one-armed Bert, the CPR clerk, and the painters from down south
They waltzed while the scent of Eileen’s flowers drifted all around the house

Lake was cold, life was hard
But they danced the dark away
Saturdays at the Nicoll place
In a town on Coldwell Bay

The lamprey came, stole all the fish, shut the business down
Gid and Eileen, they met their fate on the tracks at the edge of town
Government men, they razed it all, gone without a trace
But every spring Eileen’s flowers bloom all ‘round the old Nicoll place
